Australian Music Legend Marcie Jones Passes Away at 79, Days After Leukemia Diagnosis

The Australian music scene mourns the loss of iconic singer Marcie Jones, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 79, just days after a sudden leukemia diagnosis.

Marcie was a trailblazer in the 1960s, leading Marcie and the Cookies—one of Australia’s pioneering all-female groups—at a time when rock music was overwhelmingly dominated by male bands. Their vibrant energy and powerful performances made them one of the country’s most beloved touring acts, famously opening for The Monkees during their 1968 Australian tour.

News of her passing was shared by her daughter-in-law, Lisa, who expressed her heartbreak on social media:
“It’s with profound sadness that I share the news of my beautiful mother-in-law, Marcie Jones, passing away. I feel utterly numb. You were a legend, an icon, and your light will forever shine. I will miss you deeply. Until we meet again to sing another song.”

After the group disbanded in the early ’70s, Marcie embarked on a successful solo career. Her 1974 hit “Gonna Get Married” climbed to number 37 on the Australian charts, securing her place in the hearts of fans nationwide. Marcie’s magnetic presence also graced popular TV shows like Bandstand and The Graham Kennedy Show.

Throughout her illustrious career, Marcie shared the stage with global superstars such as Cliff Richard, Tom Jones, and Roy Orbison. Even in her final days, she continued to perform locally, enchanting audiences with her timeless voice.

Fans and fellow musicians alike have poured out their tributes:
“Marcie was a remarkable soul and one of Australia’s cherished treasures.”
“RIP my dear friend, you will be deeply missed.”

Just days before her passing, Marcie courageously revealed her leukemia diagnosis on social media:
“Starting the day with tough news—I’m in hospital with leukemia. Treatment begins soon. It’s scary, but I’ll fight with all my strength.”

Her death comes just shy of her 80th birthday, which she had hoped to celebrate with a special concert for her devoted fans.

Marcie Jones leaves behind two children, a daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter, carrying forward her legacy of passion and resilience.
