Newborn Left in Hospital Finds Hope When a Woman Asks, ‘When Can I Take Him?’

Jono Lancaster’s Inspiring Journey: Overcoming Challenges with Strength and Positivity

When Jono Lancaster was born, his biological parents made the difficult decision not to take him home from the hospital. He was diagnosed with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects facial structure and hearing. Due to the medical challenges associated with the condition, his parents felt unable to care for him.

Just a few days old, Jono was placed in the care of social services, who worked to find him a loving home. Fortunately, a compassionate woman named Jean stepped forward. The moment she heard his story, she knew she wanted to welcome him into her life. “How could you not love a child?” she said. Her next question was, “When can I take him home?”

Jono first shared his life story at the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) Breakthrough Summit in 2015, where he inspired many with his resilience.

“I was born with a genetic condition that affects my facial features. I have no cheekbones, so my eyes dip down,” he explained. “I love my little ears—they don’t get cold at night. But I do need hearing aids. I’m one of the lucky ones. Some individuals with Treacher Collins syndrome require assistance with feeding and breathing and undergo multiple surgeries to improve their quality of life.”

Jean officially adopted Jono on May 18, 1990, giving him what he calls “two birthdays.” He often shared with other children that his mother “chose” him, making him feel extra special.

Despite the love and support from Jean, Jono faced challenges growing up, including bullying due to his appearance.

“As a teenager, I started questioning why I looked different. That led me to think about my biological parents and why they made the choice they did,” he shared. “Parents are supposed to love you unconditionally. I wondered if I would ever have a family of my own. Who would want me?”

His struggles with self-acceptance were difficult, but a life-changing moment helped shift his perspective.

While working as a bartender, Jono often noticed people staring at him. One day, a customer bluntly asked, “What’s up with your face?” Instead of feeling hurt, Jono responded confidently, explaining his condition. The man, who had a tough exterior, surprised Jono with humor, joking about his own daily challenges.

For the first time in a while, Jono experienced laughter and connection, rather than judgment. This moment helped him realize the power of focusing on the positive.

Today, Jono is a motivational speaker, inspiring others to embrace their differences. He dedicates time to supporting children with Treacher Collins syndrome, helping them build confidence and self-love.

“What’s changed?” Jono says. “People are still the same, and my biological parents still choose not to be involved in my life. But my attitude has changed—and that’s powerful. Instead of letting negativity bring me down, I believe in myself. With the right mindset, anything is possible.”

Jono’s journey is a testament to the strength of self-acceptance and the impact of kindness. His story continues to inspire many around the world.
