Life is full of surprises. We can never truly predict the challenges that will come our way, but one thing is certain: we must never lose hope or stop fighting, believing that things will eventually take a positive turn.
Chelsea Hough was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her baby. Her pregnancy had been smooth, and at 36 weeks, she finally gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, whom they named Karson Jax Hough.
In the early moments of his life, Karson appeared to be a perfectly healthy baby. But then, without warning, his heart rate began to slow, and his heart ultimately stopped. The doctors immediately placed him in skin-to-skin contact with his mother, and miraculously, his heart started beating again. However, that moment of hope was short-lived. Karson’s condition quickly worsened, and he required a ventilator to support his heart and assist with his breathing.

“This entire experience is nothing short of extraordinary. This beautiful baby boy has been struck by two incredibly rare conditions, completely unrelated to one another. One of them, we still can’t pinpoint a cause,” Karson’s Nana, Lisa Hough, shared. Doctors believed that Karson had suffered a hemorrhage in his left temporal lobe, along with nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a rare genetic disorder that causes an unsafe buildup of glycine in the body’s tissues and fluids.
Given the severity of his condition, doctors told the family that the chances of survival were extremely low. After some time, they recommended that the family consider turning off his life support.
The family took the doctors’ advice to heart, carefully considering their options. They ultimately decided that it would be best to follow the doctors’ recommendation. As they gathered together in prayer, they were told they would have only about 10 minutes left with Karson before he would pass away.

As soon as the ventilator was turned off, something incredible happened—Karson began to breathe on his own. The doctors were left in shock, calling it nothing short of a miracle.
“Today, we witnessed a miracle!!” Lisa Hough wrote. “We were given 10 minutes after withdrawing intensive care and the ventilator, told he wouldn’t breathe on his own and that his heart would stop within those 10 minutes… Well, God and Karson had other plans!”
“I’m not sure why I ever thought we were so undeserving of a miracle… and I’m not sure how long we have with him, but we have him now. And now, we will cherish every moment,” Lisa said.
Once home, Karson began to thrive. His weight became healthy, and his heart rates remained stable. The glycine levels in his body dropped significantly, and with each passing day, he continued to defy the odds.
We wish this beautiful baby a long, happy, and healthy life ahead of him.
